The Blue Land – a holiday region between the Alps and lakes in Upper Bavaria
The Blue Land lies in the Upper Bavarian Alpine foothills south of Munich and encompasses the towns of Murnau am Staffelsee , Seehausen am Staffelsee , Riegsee , Spatzenhausen , Uffing am Staffelsee , Ohlstadt , Großweil , Schwaigen-Grafenaschau , and Eglfing . The region stretches between the Bavarian Alps, Lake Staffelsee , and the Murnau Moor – the largest contiguous moor in Central Europe – and uniquely combines nature, culture, and recreation.
The Blue Land owes its name to the artists associated with the Blue Rider group: Franz Marc, Gabriele Münter, and Wassily Kandinsky, who were inspired by the light, lakes, and mountains around Murnau. The Münter House , the Murnau Castle Museum , and numerous art and cultural offerings still bear witness to this important artistic history.
The landscape of the Blue Land offers ideal conditions for hiking, cycling, and excursions on and around its lakes.
