Whether it is a great grey shrike, corn crake or adder, whether it is a carnivorous sundew, Siberian iris, bug orchid or moor-king lousewort, a large abundance of plant and animal species which are long since non-existent anywhere else still prevails in the Murnau Moor, the largest contiguous and largely pristine moor region in Central Europe. With its lakes and stream courses and its geologically remarkable rows of hills known as “Köcheln”, the roughly 7,000 hectare nature reserve is also the largest bird-hatching biotope in southern Germany. Extensive litter meadows, fens and transitional moors, spring pits, backwaters and relict lakes with fully developed raised bogs combine here to form a complex of habitats with many rare and endangered species.
Starting from the Ramsach Church (also called “Ähndl”) built in the 8th century, the hike initially leads along the Ramsach and Lindach streams, always with alternating impressions of the moor and nearby mountains, and then branches off to the right on a wooden walkway. Information boards in the middle of the moor provide more detailed insights in the flora and fauna. Hiking further via the Murnau district of Westried, hikers return to Ramsach Church over a beautiful ridge with fantastic views of the entire moor and the Alps. In turn, hikers can visit the church and stop off for refreshments in the beer garden or “Gasthaus Ähndl”.
In case of emergency, please notify the nearest rescue coordination centre. Regardless of location, you can reach this throughout Germany under the telephone number 112.
From Munich via the A95 motorway and St2062 state road as well as from Garmisch-Partenkirchen via the federal highway B2
