Hikers are walking on virtually historic terrain when they hike along the Hungerbach circular route, because in 1809 the so-called “Count Arco Battle” of the Bavarians against the Tyroleans took place there around Spatzenhausen. This battle is still commemorated every year with a shooting contest bearing the same name. Back then during the era of Emperor Franz and Napoleon, the farmers courageously and successfully defended their villages against the plundering enemy. A cannonball (which is privately owned) and a Count Arco Monument in Spatzenhausen still attest to this battle.
Today the charming area characterised by farming conveys a peaceful impression, yet one can easily imagine how riders galloped over the fields and the cannons thundered. Lovely views repeatedly open up on the beautiful, flat trail through forest and over meadows between Spatzenhausen via Tauting to Eglfing.

The spires of churches appear now and then behind hills, and disappear again in order to make room for impressive views of the nearly mountains. After the little village of Tauting, which invites you to take a rest with a biotope and a farmer’s café featuring regional products, the route mostly continues via field paths back to Eglfing. Historic aspects of a different nature are also waiting for hikers there. In the village you can visit an approximately 300 year-old, partially restored farmhouse decorated with frescos and a museum of local history.

The “nature experience playground” is a welcome change for children. Back in Spatzenhausen, the route can be continued towards Riegsee, which is just about three kilometres away.

In case of emergency, please notify the nearest rescue coordination centre. Regardless of location, you can reach this throughout Germany under the telephone number 112.
