Mountain tour - Heimgarten tour

Mountain tour

The Heimgarten is Ohlstadt’s local mountain. With its view of the surrounding lakes as well as the Ammergau Alps, Wetterstein Mountains and Ester Mountains it is one of the most beautiful panoramic mountains in the Upper Bavarian Alps.

  • Duration 5:30 h
  • Distance 11,9 km
  • Ascent 1141 m
  • Descent 1139 m
  • Lowest point 695 m
  • Highest point 1750 m
The start of this hike is the parking area at the end of Wankstraße in Ohlstadt. From the parking area, follow the signage for “Wankhütte and Rauheck” in a southern direction. The trail is continuously marked with the number 442.

The route proceeds on a road across meadows. After you have crossed the stream known as Greiter Bach, you follow a ridge trail that ascends very steeply into the forest. It becomes increasingly steeper, and the trail eventually becomes a narrow mountain trail. At an altitude of just under 1,100 metres the path breaks off to the left in an eastward direction, and a short time later it is slightly flatter until a forest road is crossed. The route continues straight ahead up to the trail sign “Buchrain and Heimgarten”, which we follow to the left. The trail goes slightly uphill again through sparse forest and alpine meadows. On the ridge you will reach the cross at Buchrain (1,456 m). There the trail continues to the right, and after nearly 1.5 km you will reach the summit of the Rauheck (1,590 m). The meadows here invite you to take a rest with a beautiful panorama.

The route continues slightly downhill, and from a distance you can already recognise the summit of the Heimgarten. The trail continues to lead straight ahead and is once again steep until we are standing on the Heimgarten summit. The alpine hut known as Heimgarten Hütte underneath the summit invites you to enjoy a leisurely snack with a wonderful panorama.

The route for the descent continues briefly on the same way back, downhill to the right at Feichtl; from here the trail sign is marked 442 and 441. The route continues on narrow switchbacks past the alpine hut Bärenfleckhütte, following the signage to Ohlstadt. The trail switches several times from a mountain trail to a road and proceeds constantly downhill. At the parking area at the end of Heimgartenstraße you keep to the left and cross a meadow, and then return to the starting point.
