Directions

From Bad Kohlgrub train station:
We follow the footpath in a westerly direction next to the tracks, cross a street and continue along the footpath to the “Waldschlucht” sign, turn right through the underpass and then immediately keep left again. We follow the street for a short distance and turn left into the small footpath in front of the playground. We walk uphill, reach Kehrerstrasse and turn right until we reach the sign “St. Rochus Chapel”. We turn down this path and can already see the chapel.

Hike from the St. Rochus Chapel in Bad Kohlgrub to Murnau:
We follow the path across the large meadow, across the Rochusfeld (path no. 6a) and keep left at the next small street. We pass several farms and follow hiking trail 8b towards Hinterkehr. The path leads through a meadow, then to the right along the garden fence. We continue to keep to the right, go down the street and through Hinterkehr. We then follow the sign “Schöffau 5,5 km” in a sharp left turn. Shortly after passing a farm on our left, we turn sharp right and head uphill to Vorderkehr. We follow the serpentine path, leaving the small chapel on our right. Shortly afterwards the dirt road leads downhill and we have a wonderful view of Lake Staffelsee with the mountain range in the background. After several bends, a small path towards “Sprittelsberg” begins to the right of an agricultural building. We follow it, shortly afterwards we come to a road and turn left. Where the forest begins, we continue straight ahead and follow the sign “Sprittelsberg 1,3 km”. Shortly before Sprittelsberg we cross a stream, come to a road and follow it uphill to the right. We can already see the houses and right at the first farm we turn left. Here Agathe Fischer offers cheese made in-house. The path continues past the farm, we come to a small street and follow it to the left. At the sign “Staffelsee 3,0 km, Murnau 7,5 km” we turn left and follow the forest path through the forest until we come to a path just before the Staffelsee, which we follow to the right and then immediately turn right again Westried. We stay on this forest path and finally come to a tarred road, turn left at the fork and reach the connecting road between Murnau and Bad Kohlgrub. We turn left onto the footpath next to the street, cross the street after a few meters (be careful of traffic!) and continue our way opposite on Ammergauer Straße. After just a few meters, this leads to a footpath that leads over the tracks of the Oberammergau railway line (be careful!). Then we continue to the left and are now in Moosrain. We follow the road until the “Moosrundweg” branches off to the left, follow it and in the next bend we come to a footpath with the sign “Ramsachkirche 40 Min.”. We take this footpath through a small alluvial forest and then step out onto the Murnau ridge with a wonderful view of the Murnauer Moos and the surrounding mountains. The path then crosses the tracks (careful!), leads to the right towards “Ähndl” and along the railway tracks until it crosses them again (careful!) and continues on the other side. Again we have a wonderful view of the Moos and the entire landscape, framed by the mountain ranges of the Ester, Wetterstein and Ammergebirge.

Stele 1: Murnauer Moos
Before the footpath soon joins a wider path, we pass an information and viewing area that was built in summer 2011. We then keep right and immediately left again to the Ramsach church “Ähndl”. We follow the path that later becomes an agricultural road. We can see the little church from afar, which has been a symbol of this place for centuries.
Refreshments: “Zum Ähndl” restaurant, Tel. 0 88 41/52 41 (closed on Thursday)
Within the enclosure of the small church, a stele awaits us for rest and inner contemplation.

Stele 2: Similar
To continue walking, we turn to the footpath through the small birch avenue, follow it uphill and walk along the ridge for a bit until we reach an old oak avenue. At the end we turn right into a small birch avenue. Where it ends, we follow the “Lourdes Grotto” sign first to the right and shortly afterwards onto the footpath to the left. The grotto, built in 1893, was added to the monument protection list in 1999. A stele and benches await us to linger.

Stele 3: Lourdes Grotto
When leaving the cave we choose the same path we came from. Where the footpath meets the street again, we first turn right and then turn left into Birkenallee. We follow it to the end, continue to the right and shortly afterwards turn left onto the footpath through the old lime tree avenue. We cross the railway tracks (careful!), shortly afterwards keep left, take a few steps and are in the cultural park and therefore at our destination.
