Directions

We start the hike at the Murnau Culture and Conference Center, cross Bahnhofstrasse, turn into Postgasse and after a few meters reach the pedestrian zone. Here we keep to the right and can see the Marian Column and the Maria Hilf Church in front of us. Inserted into the house facade, the church was built between 1653 and 1655 and has housed the statue of the supposedly miraculous Mother of God since 1824, which previously stood on the Eichholz under the “Four Linden Trees”. Many pilgrims were drawn to Murnau back then and Our Lady still enjoys many visitors today. When leaving the church we turn left and shortly afterwards turn into Schlossbergstrasse. According to the house number. 12a we continue right on Mayr-Graz-Weg and pass the St. Nicholas Church, which was first mentioned in a document in 1341. St. Nicholas was venerated as the patron of carters, raftsmen, beer brewers, pharmacists and wax pullers, all professions that were based in Murnau at the time. We follow the path at the fork to the right, pass the “Emanuel von Seidl Elementary School” and shortly afterwards cross Schwaigangerstrasse. We are now “Am Eichholz”, follow the road uphill and come to the “Vier Linden”, where a stele waits for us next to two benches.

Stela 7: Four linden trees
A plaque tells of the miracle of tears at the beginning of the 19th century, which turned this viewing point into a place of pilgrimage. The “Four Linden Trees” were also a motif for old reverse glass painting and early photography. Wassily Kandinsky created “Landscape with a Tower” here in 1908. We continue on the road we came from. It leads straight ahead onto a footpath that leads downhill under some mighty old copper beeches. We cross a street and now follow the footpath on the other side towards Hagen/Guglhör. Immediately after a single house on the left side, a forest road leads left towards Froschhauser See/Riegsee, which we always follow straight ahead until we reach Froschhausen. We keep to the right and after a few meters we reach the small church “St. Leonhard”, which is so closely linked to the tradition of the Froschhauser Leonhardi trip. The former Gothic pilgrimage church was renovated in Baroque style in 1631, but the exact age is unknown. A stele awaits us near the entrance. The key for the church can be borrowed at Hof Riegseer Straße 15.

Stele 8: Leonhardi ride
To continue the hike, we follow Riegseer Straße for a bit, pass the public bathing area at Froschhauser See on our right and a short time later, at the turnoff to Lothdorf, turn left onto the footpath that leads us along Riegsee to the village of Riegsee and there flows into Dorfstrasse. We go left until we reach Seestrasse, which turns left and follow it.
If there is fresh snow in winter, the footpath at the lake may not be clear. Then we don't turn into Seestrasse, but continue right, pass the Gasthof Westner (closed on Tuesdays from May to September, Monday and Tuesday from October to April), Tel. 0 88 41 / 9 06 73, www.westnerriegsee.de and immediately afterwards the “guest’s house”. Shortly afterwards we turn left onto Hofheimer Straße and follow this street until we reach a tar road. From a distance we can see the Mesnerhaus chapel in front of us on the hill.
From spring to late autumn we follow the Seestraße. At the fork we turn left and after a few meters enter the campsite with the restaurant “Seestuben” (closed on Mondays), Tel. 0 88 41 / 26 77, www.seestube-riegsee.homepage.t-online.de.
We walk straight ahead past the Seestuben, shortly afterwards we come to a fork and turn left onto the footpath. After a short time the path becomes narrower and leads between pastures and forests very close to the shore of the Riegsee. We soon step out into the open landscape again and continue to follow this hiking path along the bank. We pass several private properties before reaching a small public swimming area. The path ends here, we now turn right onto a field path. Where it meets the next street, we turn left and then continue straight until we reach a tarred road. We can see the Mesnerhaus chapel on the hill from afar.

From here the directions for summer and winter versions are the same again.

We now go a few meters to the right on the tarred road, cross the street (be careful of traffic!) and turn onto the small trail that leads us up the hill and to the Mesnerhaus chapel, where another stele is waiting for us.

Stele 9: Mesnerhauskapelle Aidling

Since the Mesnerhauskapelle Aidling is on private property, we go back the same way from the Mesnerhauskapelle (don't continue hiking across the farm grounds!), cross the street again (watch out for traffic) and get back on the field path. At the second junction we turn left and after about 300 meters we reach a road. We cross this and walk a short distance along the side of the road to the left towards Aidling. We then turn right onto “Steinbreiten” and take a left turn to reach the center of Aidlingen. Once we reach the village road, we keep right and follow the footpath through the village.

We continue to follow the village road and keep left at the fork and the sign “Höhlmühle Rundweg”. Shortly afterwards we turn left onto Lichteneggstrasse towards “Aidlinger Höhe”. After the last house before the edge of the forest, we turn right and follow the path, which shortly afterwards leads to the left and through two revolving gates one after the other. We come to a wonderful viewing area, where a bench next to a crucifix invites you to linger. From here a path leads along the edge of the forest, over the roots of mighty old beech and spruce trees. We step back out into the open through a turnstile onto a meadow and now keep slightly to the right until we reach a ridge. From there we follow the path to the left and come to an upright stone. Battles with the Swedes are said to have taken place here in the 17th century. We now keep left and go through the gate. From now on we follow the signs “Höhlmühle Rundweg”. On the way through the forest we come to a junction where a sign points to a small grotto. It was built there about 100 years ago, probably because of a vow. We continue to follow the signposted circular path, finally coming out of the forest again and coming to a road. We now turn right, use the left side of the road and after just ten minutes we reach the Höhlmühle forester's lodge (note: unfortunately currently closed).
As we continue walking, we follow the road we came on for a bit and turn right at the “Aidling” sign. Shortly afterwards we follow the forest path to the right, which leads us back to Aidling, where we follow the village road and shortly afterwards reach the “Gasthof Post” again.
