Directions

We continue on Aidlinger Dorfstrasse and at the next bend turn left into Lohwiesstrasse. We stay on this road, which soon leads out of Aidling. In front of us we now have the gently hilly foothills of the Alps, partly pastureland, partly wooded and in the background the Alpine chain. We follow the small street, continue straight ahead at the first fork, turn right downhill at the next one and finally come back to the village road at the “Haus des Gastes” in Riegsee. We go left and pass the Gasthof Westner (closed on Tuesdays from May to September, Mondays and Tuesdays from October to April), Tel. 0 88 41 / 9 06 73, www.gasthof-westner.de.
We continue to follow the village road and finally turn right onto the footpath we came on. Along the banks of the Riegsee we get back onto the road near Froschhausen, cross it and turn left into the small street, which shortly afterwards leads us past a gravel pit. We then turn right onto the next street and follow it as it winds through the landscape and finally leads uphill. We cross a forest and now reach the Hagen ridge, where another wonderful view awaits us. If we have reserved overnight accommodation in Perlach, we follow the sign “Guglhörrundweg” to the left. After about ten minutes we reach Perlach. Overnight accommodation directly on the path: Christine Wörmann, Tel. 0 88 41 / 18 83, www.riegsee.de/woermann.
Otherwise we follow the high path to the right towards Hagen. The small church, dedicated to St. Blaise, was once a much-visited pilgrimage site that had its own parish since 1300. In addition to rich furnishings, it is worth mentioning an “asylum stone” that was originally placed outside and said that anyone who reached the church enjoyed protection here and could not be persecuted any further. Right next to the church is the beer garden of the former Heimgarten inn, Tel. 0 88 41/14 14. Weather permitting, it is open on Fridays from 17.00 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays.
From here we follow the road downhill until we reach Kocheler Straße near Mühlhagen, which we cross (be careful of traffic!).

We follow the footpath next to the road to the left, cross the Loisach Bridge and turn right to Achrain. There we follow the road until we come to a horse farm. After this, turn left through a gate and a short section through the moss, which you cross on a boardwalk. We reach a forest and cross it to the Pömetsried glider airfield. We go right near the runway and then again into the forest, keep left and always follow the forest road straight ahead. After we have left the A95 behind us, we keep right and turn left before Wetzsteinlaine. If you look straight ahead you can see the estate and the church in Weichs. We follow the path along the stream until we come to a road. We cross this (be careful of traffic!) and continue on the dirt road opposite.

We come across a path, turn left and see four mighty old linden trees from afar. In the middle is the “Devil’s Column” and a plaque tells of what Father Miller from Schlehdorf Monastery experienced at this point in 1668. We take time here to take a break. We then go back a short distance along the same path, but then continue straight across the bridge and shortly afterwards turn left. We are now at the “Fieberkircherl”, which was built in 1640 based on a vow. In 1634/35, 114 of 450 people from Ohlstadt and Weichser died of the plague within one year. After the vow, the fatal illness disappeared. The bell in the wooden tower bears the year 1644 and several votive plaques bear witness to the fact that in past centuries there was a lively pilgrimage to this little church, which also included a hermitage. We continue along the Wetzsteinlaine, turn right at the third junction and come to the “Hagrain Chapel”, which was built in 1765. Here the Ohlstadt whetstone makers paused for morning prayers while they were on their way to their difficult and dangerous work in the quarries. The rare craft of whetstone makers was mentioned in documents as early as 1350 and was practiced until the middle of the last century. The stones needed to sharpen the scythes were shipped on rafts and sold throughout Europe. We follow Hagrainstrasse towards the center of the village, pass a farm cheese dairy and shortly afterwards we are at the town hall. We keep left and reach the center with refreshments and shopping opportunities.

Excursion tip from Ohlstadt:
Open-air museum “An der Glentleiten” and “Bavarian Main and State Stud Schwaiganger”

This excursion begins on the main street in front of the Ohlstadt Church of St. Laurentius. From here we follow the street slightly uphill, cross the town hall square and turn further uphill into Hagrainstraße. Shortly afterwards we follow Floriansweg to the left to Wetzsteinlaine, go a few meters to the right and cross the stream over a small bridge. Now a footpath leads us slightly uphill, past pastures and later as a ravine between trees and bushes. The path becomes a footpath through a meadow, but next to a barn we come to the next path, which we follow to the left. There is now a desert farm on our left. But we stay on our path, soon meet another one and follow him to the left. We are now on the “Kreutalm-Open-Air Museum-Schwaiganger” circular route and will always stay on this path. Since it also serves as a forest road, it is paved with stone pavement up to the viewing point into the Loisachtal. Finally we reach the Alpengasthof Kreut-Alm (no day off), Tel. 0 88 41/58 22, www.kreutalm.de, and just a short distance further we reach the Glentleiten open-air museum. It is open from March to November. For more information, call 0 88 51/18 50, www.glentleiten.de. Several places to stop for refreshments await us on the museum grounds.
We find around 60 historical buildings from Upper Bavaria here. In addition to farms, workshops, mills and alpine pastures, there are also storage buildings such as granaries and hay barns, as well as an inn, a Salettl and a general store. Here we can immerse ourselves in the past of Upper Bavaria, we experience and experience how people used to live in the countryside. This museum is really worth a visit!
When leaving the museum, we walk a short distance back the way we came, but turn right at the Kreut-Alm and follow the sign “Schwaiganger – Ohlstadt 6 km”.
Now it goes downhill, through mixed forest and past paddocks. To the left of the path is one of the mightiest old linden trees in this area. Shortly before we come to Kocheler Straße, we turn left into the small street that leads to the Schwaiganger Bavarian Main and State Stud. Horses have been bred and kept here since the mid-16th century. In 1687, the Bavarian Elector Max Emanuel acquired the stud farm. Further information about guided tours and events: Tel. 0 88 41 / 6 13 60, www.schwaiganger.bayern.de.
Refreshments available at the Landgasthof Herzogin Anna (closed on Mondays), Tel. 0 88 41 /62 64 30, www.herzogin-anna.de. We then follow the signpost to Ohlstadt. When leaving the area through the large gate, we go straight ahead for a moment, turn left in front of the small church and pass a small pond before keeping right. We now continue towards Ohlstadt until we turn left just before Schwaiganger Straße and follow the small street slightly uphill. We always stay on this path. Where it forks at the edge of the forest, we continue to the right. At the next fork we stay to the right and follow the path through the mixed forest. When we come out of the forest again, we soon come to a small road and turn right. The path now leads downhill, at the next intersection we turn left. We soon pass the “Devil’s Column”, continue straight across the bridge and towards the village. We come to Schwaiganger Straße and turn left towards the center of the village, where there are various restaurants and shops.
