A very long bike tour for cyclists in good physical condition, which leads through the entire Zugspitz region and offers top-class scenic views.

This tour leads from the picturesque artist town of Murnau am Staffelsee past the Murnauer Moos via Ohlstadt, Eschenlohe, Oberau and Farchant to Garmisch-Partenkirchen and back again. The paths on this route are very well developed and signposted and lead partly on asphalt and partly on gravel through the idyllic landscape of the Loisachtal.

Directions

We start at the train station in Murnau and first head towards the town center. Continuing south we first go to the Ähndl restaurant, where we turn into the Murnauer Moos. Through the fascinating nature reserve we go to Grafenaschau and on to Eschenhlohe. In Eschenlohe we turn south and cycle on the well-signposted cycle path via Farchant, Oberau and Burgrain to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Again and again we either drive directly along the Loisach or just a few meters away from it.


If you want to make the detour to Grainau, turn right in Burgrain, immediately after crossing the Losiach (road bridge). The cycle path takes us along the tracks into the Partenkirchen district. Now we keep to the right and come across the Loisach again, which we follow to Grainau. The route then takes us further to Hammersbach and along the southern edge of the town back towards Garmisch-Partenkirchen. After a long rest, we head back towards Murnau, taking the direct route via Ohlstadt and not the Murnauer Moos.

The route leads along and through a number of towns, all of which offer various places to stop for refreshments. We also need sufficient refreshment on this very long route (around 80 km!).

Road-safe bicycle, bicycle helmet, daytime bicycle backpack (approx. 20 liters) with rain cover, comfortable sports shoes, if necessary cycling shoes, weather-adapted and durable clothing in a multi-layer principle, if necessary cycling jersey, if necessary cycling gloves, air pump, bicycle tools, sun and rain protection , provisions and drinking water, drinking bottle and suitable holder, first aid kit, pocket knife, cell phone, if necessary cell phone holder for the handlebars, if necessary headlamp and reflectors, maps

Author's tip

If the number of kilometers is a bit too sporty for you, you can skip the two detours via Grafenaschau and behind Garmisch-Partenkirchen to the tranquil Grainau.

Arrival & Parking

Motorway A95 Munich - Garmisch-Partenkirchen to the Murnau/Kochel exit. After the exit, keep towards Murnau and follow the country road to Murnau am Staffelsee. You drive through the town via Kocheler Straße and after a sharp left turn you come to a large intersection. Turn left here onto the B 2 towards Garmisch-Partenkirchen. After the Murnau end of town sign, turn right into Ramsachstrasse and follow the street to the paid hiking car park.

Alternatively, park at Lake Staffelsee and enjoy a beautiful view of the lake before you set off. There is another parking option at the P6 festival site in Murnau.

Public transportation

There are hourly connections to Murnau from Munich main station.
