Tradition and customs

lived tradition

In the Blue Land, traditions are lived all year round. The Seehausen lake procession for Corpus Christi is unique in its form. The lake festivals at Lake Staffelsee are a lively affair in summer. And in autumn the locals eagerly await the Froschhauser Leonhardi ride.

At Christmas, the Murnau pedestrian zone is festively decorated and the Murnauer Schäffler dance every seven years during carnival season.

Leonhardi trip

The Leonhardi trip from Murnau to Froschhausen takes place every year on November 6th. More than 30 decorated horses and around 60 festive carriages set off for the horse blessing.

Sea procession in Seehausen

Every year on Corpus Christi, the lake procession, which is unique in Bavaria, takes place in Seehausen. After Holy Mass, the procession travels on a ferry to the island of Wörth. Accompanied by many small boats with festively dressed believers, the presence of Jesus Christ in consecrated bread and wine is remembered on this day. Once on the island, the congregation goes to the altar in the St. Simpert Chapel.

A procession also takes place in Murnau on Corpus Christi Day after Holy Mass. The festively dressed members of the parish, the communion children and clubs in their traditional costumes follow the monstrance with the Blessed Sacrament, which the priest carries under a "sky" to the 4 altars in the village. These are traditionally built in front of the 4 breweries. There is singing and prayer.

Sea festivals and more in the Blue Land

Every summer, various lake festivals are celebrated in Seehausen and Uffing. Always accompanied by music from local bands, things are sociable there.

At the traditional fishing competition at the boat landing in Seehausen, 24 boys compete against each other. Standing on rowing boats elongated with wooden boards and each "armed" with a lance, the aim is to get the opponent into the water. The winner gets to call themselves the Fisherman King for a year.

The “big sea festival” in Uffing always features brilliant fireworks.

Celebrations also take place at the annual folk festival in Murnau as well as at various forest festivals - for example in Ohlstadt.

Advent and Christmas in the Blue Land

Do you like to put homemade items on the gift table? At the hobby artists' Christmas market in the culture and conference center you will find a wide selection of gifts, treats and Christmas decorations.

It continues with that large Christmas market in front of the culture and conference center in Murnau. Every Saturday at 15.30:XNUMX p.m. you can get in the mood for Christmas with a concert in one of the beautiful churches in the Blue Land. Finally, the Staffelseechor and the wind instruments of the youth and wind orchestra sing and blow the Christmas holidays at the large Christmas tree under the castle.

The Christmas market in the Glentleiten open-air museum is an absolute highlight in Advent with its unique ambience. You shouldn't miss the clubs' Christmas market in Ohlstadt either.

As soon as The Blue Land is covered in a thick blanket of snow, the horse-drawn sleighs drive through the Murnauer Moos nature reserve again and the torchlight hikes begin.

You can find a variety of other events in the “staaden Zeit” in the events calendar.
