Directions

Before we continue hiking today, we pay a visit to the Ohlstadt Mariengrotte. It is hidden behind the Church of St. Laurentius. To find it, we go through the cemetery around the church and find a passage in the wall in the eastern corner. We can walk through the small area around the grotto via two stone stairs. According to the chronicle, Pastor Schlintmann's handwritten note book states that it was built "from March to September 1910 through voluntary donations". It is still visited by locals as a place of silent prayer and intercession. A good place to start the day and a new stage of the journey. The village church also invites you to visit. It was first mentioned in 1085, the church burned down in 1702, and the current church was consecrated in 1762. For sixty years the small “Fieberkircherl” had to serve as a replacement for the village church. Back on the main street we follow it to the left, go right past the maypole into Heimgartenstraße, follow it and then continue straight ahead on Wankstraße. It goes slightly uphill, the road forks before a bridge, we keep left and come to the “Cold Waterfalls circular route”. After the gate we follow the small footpath uphill. At the “Ramm” junction we continue to the right and shortly afterwards we have a wonderful view of Ohlstadt, the Murnauer Moos and the entire surrounding landscape. This used to be the starting point for the natural ice rink of the famous Ohlstadt bobsledders, and a small ski lift operates here in winter. We follow the path along the hill, past the war memorial and go straight on to the Ohlstadt sports field. We come to a forest road and follow the sign “Eschenlohe via Heuberg 5,8 km”. After about 200 meters we pass through a gate into a cattle pasture. We follow the forest road until a small footpath with the sign “Boschet-Rundweg” appears on the right. As we follow this path for a bit through the “humpback meadows” and a small forest, we see the “Boschet Chapel” with five wayside shrines already appearing. It was built out of gratitude because the Swedes spared the village and its inhabitants during the Thirty Years' War (1618–48). In 1874, anthrax raged among the animals, the farmers made a vow of annual supplication in the chapel and the epidemic died out. A stele and a bench invite you to linger. If we look through the small window in the door, we see a “Black Madonna” with child to the right of the altar.

Stela 10: Boschet Chapel We continue towards the south, a short distance along the path we just came from, but now we keep straight ahead and turn left at the next fork in the path. We continue to keep left and come back to the forest road from which we turned off before. We follow it to the right for about 5 km towards Eschenlohe. Here we move through wooded terrain, which is particularly pleasant on hot summer days. Outside Eschenlohe we come to a road and follow it to the left towards “Asamklamm”. After a few hundred meters we follow the sign “Asamklammsteg” to the right. On a narrow iron footbridge we cross this impressive gorge, which water falling from the mountain has torn into the rock over the millennia. At the other end of the footbridge we follow a small path. Where it meets a path, we turn right and shortly afterwards turn right again. Now a path leads us in serpentine lines and over a number of steps directly into the interior of the gorge. Depending on the season and weather, we can experience a roaring torrent or just some idyllic pools. In addition to two benches, another stele is waiting for us here. Caution: In winter, especially when there is fresh snow, the path into the interior of the gorge may not be accessible! Then we stay on the upper path!

Stele 11: Asamklamm We now follow the footpath at the edge of the gorge. Finally the path forks towards the exit, we climb up a few steps on the left, follow the path and shortly afterwards reach the Wengerer-Hof with overnight accommodation (closed on Sunday from noon), Tel.0 88 24 / 9 20 30, www.alpenhotel -wengererhof.de. At the level of the farm we turn right onto a meadow path, go through a gate and get back to the Eschenlaine. We follow the field path to the left towards the center of the village, first reach Asamklammstrasse, then Krottenkopfstrasse and finally cross the Loisach Bridge. In the village center of Eschenlohe we find further accommodation as well as various refreshments and shopping opportunities.
